ISLAMABAD: Tuesday saw the announcement by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) of a "substantial" relief and recovery package for flood-devastated Pakistan, with the goal of "immediately and long-term supporting people, livelihoods, and infrastructure."
The ADB announced that it would use ongoing projects to restore damaged infrastructure, such as roads and irrigation systems, as well as to support the growth and financial stability of the agriculture sector to increase food security in the short- and medium-term.
According to the statement, "We are also processing countercyclical support to help the poor and vulnerable, notably women and children, regardless of the impacts of food prices and other external shocks." Long-term projects that promote post-flood reconstruction and improve climate and catastrophe resilience would be given priority, it was underlined.
"When it is complete, we will give further information about our new aid package. To help the more than 33 million people affected by the disaster restore their lives and means of subsistence, we will collaborate closely with the government and other international organisations, the ADB said.
