Everything New in iOS 16.1 Beta: Live Activities API, Wallet App Changes, Clean Energy Charging, Matter, and More.

Despite the fact that iOS 16 was just made available on Monday, Apple is already working on testing the upcoming operating system update. Today, iOS 16.1 was released to developers, bringing with it a number of noteworthy new features.

iOS 16.1

Customizing the Lock Screen and Home Screen

Instead of only the Lock Screen, users now have the option to customise either the Lock Screen or the Home Screen when tapping the "Customize" interface on the Lock Screen. This makes it simpler to change the iPhone's appearance all in one place without having to go through a number of processes.

Matter Support

The addition of a new "Matter Accessories" section to the Settings app in iOS 16.1 suggests that Apple is getting ready for the Matter smart home standard's introduction this fall.

Matter Support

By tapping the Matter Accessories section, all Matter accessories that have been added to a connected service should be displayed. The text states that "These can also be added to additional services with an app that supports Matter." With Matter, smart devices from many manufacturers will be able to communicate with one another, allowing, for instance, HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant devices to cooperate.

Apple states in the update's release notes that installing a profile on your iPhone is a must for pairing Matter accessories. There are currently a number of other concerns with the Matter standard as well, and remedies are offered on Apple's website.
  • The accessory tile remains even when Apple Home is removed from the Matter accessory's Connected Services menu in Home.
  • When pairing a Matter attachment, you could get a notification telling you to activate Wi-Fi.
  • If a Matter accessory is not reachable, accessory details might not open.
  • The Matter Support Framework pairing API may prevent you from utilising a Matter ECM code to pair.
  • When pairing Matter accessories, notifications for uncertified accessories may surface.
  • If a Matter attachment is already linked to another environment, you might not be able to pair it.
  • The iCloud account used by the device that starts the pairing process and the home hub must match. A user who has been invited cannot pair Matter accessories; only the home's owner may do so.

Clean Energy Charging

In the Battery section of the Settings app, a toggle for "Clean Energy Charging" has been included in iOS 16.1. By only charging when lower-emission electricity is available, Clean Energy Charging will attempt to lessen your carbon footprint.

Depending on your daily charging habit, Apple claims that the iPhone will still reach full power before you need to use it. If desired, the feature can be toggled off. When updating to iOS 16.1, it seems to be turned on by default.

Live Activities API

The Live Activities API, which was accessible to developers for testing purposes during the iOS 16 beta, is added once more in iOS 16.1. Live Activities cannot currently be accessed by iPhone users because there are no apps that support them, but developers can start adding support.

Delete Wallet App

The Wallet app can now be completely deleted from the iPhone with iOS 16.1. The app could be taken off the Home Screen in iOS 16 and older iOS versions, but it could not be deleted. For individuals who do not wish to utilise Apple Pay or other Wallet services, it can now be completely uninstalled.

Delete Wallet App

The choice comes as Apple is being sued for allegedly breaking antitrust rules by making Apple Pay the only mobile wallet accessible for tap-to-pay transactions on iPhones.

Battery Percentage in Status Bar

The iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini, all iPhones that were not compatible with the functionality in iOS 16, now have the battery % added to the battery icon in the status bar thanks to iOS 16.1.

Screenshot UI

An redesigned interface with the options to delete, copy, and delete screenshots appears in the upper right corner of the screen when the Screenshot editing tool is closed. This menu was formerly located at the bottom of the iPhone; however, the new implementation is more streamlined and less obtrusive because it does not occupy the entire bottom of the display.
