KARACHI: On Saturday, the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) demanded that Sharia law take precedence over all other laws and regulations in the nation, including the "controversial" Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018.
The leader of MWM, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, released a statement in which he claimed that Article 3 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018 violated human dignity and called for its proper amendment. He claimed that the article gave everyone the freedom to choose their gender based on personal inclination and preference.
However, Allama Abbas warned, "This permission may result in social disorder and perversion." He continued, "If someone has any issues with their gender identity, they should be treated medically and psychologically, so that this law could not be used for any shameful purpose. The protection of their rights, just like those of men and women, is a requirement of human dignity and respect because the third gender is a respectable part of our society."
He believed that in such delicate matters, considerations of Sharia should be made because no one could be permitted to change their real gender in accordance with their preferences.
